3 Benefits Of Anti-Wrinkle Injections
Botulinum toxin is frequently referred to as BOTOX, which is the brand name of the drug produced by the company Allergan. It is a protein produced by the bacteria (Clostridium botulinum) and is used for various medical and aesthetic purposes internationally.
Botulinum toxin injections work by reducing chemical signalling at the end of the nerve, which results in less muscle contraction within the treatment area. This temporarily relaxes the muscle and helps reduce the formation of fine lines and wrinkles that occur during repetitive muscle movement (contraction).
Muscle relaxing treatments comes with minimal pain. The needles used are very fine (similar to insulin needles) and pass into the skin with minimal discomfort.
These products have been used medically for over 40 years. However, (medically speaking) patients should consider the overall risks and benefits when having injectable procedures and this should be discussed with a healthcare practitioner as part of the consultation process.
Muscle relaxing injections should always be prescribed, and administered, by qualified healthcare professionals to reduce the risk of adverse effects and complications.
This treatment is not available to anyone under the age of 18 years. Some patients choose to start these types of treatments, to prevent lines and wrinkles forming, in their mid-late twenties. It is ultimately a personal choice and a consultation will be required.
As with most injectable procedures you might notice some localised reddening, swelling, bruising to the injected area but these typically resolve relatively quickly.
Patients may continue their daily routine. It is advisable not to touch the injected areas for a minimum of 4-6 hours post treatment and avoid alcohol, strenuous activities, saunas, steam rooms, sunbeds, and facials for at least 24-48 hours.
You should not have treatment if:
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- History of anaphylactic shock (or you are allergic to any of the ingredients)
- You have a history of neurology disorders (Multiple-sclerosis/ Myasthenia Gravis/ Motor Neurone Disease/ Muscular Dystrophy).
